How Watching a Leaf Fall Changed my Perspective

When you are in the presence of nature, it is easy to forget about the stresses of modern life. As I watched a leaf falling to the ground, I was reminded of how small I am in comparison to nature. I was reminded that nothing in this world is completely mine, but that is part of what makes life interesting.

Watching the Leaf Fall

As fall is now well underway, I walked into the backyard after letting the dog out and noticed the leaves falling around me. There was one leaf in particular with a stem still attached swirling around as it fell that caught my attention and that’s when it hit me.

As I watched the leaf slowly spin and descend to the ground, I realized that it was once attached to a living thing and part of a community of other leaves helping the tree it was attached to survive.

Now the leaf was slowly spiraling down and came to rest lightly on the ground beside the other leaves that had met a similar fate, but what was the difference that had made me notice that particular leaf?

I think it was the fact that the leaf had made its exit and committed its final act far more gracefully than any of the other leaves around it. This leaf’s final act made me realize just how interesting life can be, and that nothing in this world is really mine. It’s amazing how the simple act of a leaf falling to the ground can give you a whole new perspective!

Nothing is Mine

By itself, one leaf falling doesn’t make much of a difference, but all the leaves falling together take a great weight off the tree.

This made me realize that nothing in the world is really mine just like the tree does not belong to just one leaf no matter how graceful that leaf might have been.

We are connected together in ways we don’t even realize just like all the leaves on a tree are connected all helping to sustain the whole organism. In a world so full of possessions, we can get so focused on what’s ours that we forget that everyone has a part to play even if it’s not obvious.

What Makes Life Interesting

The leaf falling to the ground gracefully made me realize that one day, my time will come to an end, but I can make the decision to approach it in a graceful manner so that moment is memorable and beautiful and doesn’t cause pain and discomfort to others.

I believe that the fact we have the power to choose what we do with our lives is what makes life interesting. In its last moments, that leaf could have fallen gently to the ground and been unnoticed like all the other leaves falling around it.

Instead, it decided to be interesting and creative after its time ensuring the tree’s survival was done.

Sometimes, the simplest things in life can give you a whole new perspective on things and make you question yourself and the way life really is. Maybe you gained a new but different perspective from reading this.
